Spending on Health Insurance Increased Nearly 50% in the Last 10 Years

Rising healthcare costs are a well-known issue in the U.S. healthcare industry, but the reasoning behind increased costs isn’t always clear (intentionally), which provides a perfect environment for continued rising costs. “The US is spending more on healthcare than ever before….total spending on health services, excluding premiums, for those with employer-sponsored insurance plans increased by 44% from 2007 to 2016.

Enrollment in high deductible health plans grew from 5% in 2007 to 29% in 2016.

With the increasing amounts of mergers and acquisitions in the healthcare space, hospitals are taking over other hospitals and private practices. With this, insurance agreements and service charges change so patients can end up paying more for the same services from the same doctors in a large hospital system than they did in a private practice.
