The Office of Inspector General (OIG) recently released a report revealing hospitals have been overbilling and upcoding Medicare patients. OIG estimates this resulted in a $1B overpayment for fiscal years 2016 and 2017. CMS agreed with OIG’s findings and stated “CMS has taken action to prevent improper Medicare payments by educating health care providers on proper billing.”
