Most Coronavirus Tests Cost About $100. Why Did One Cost $2,315?

Coronavirus testing prices on average cost between $50 and $200. Yet, some out-of-network testing facilities have been charging 2,200 percent higher prices. This is, in-part, due to the recent CARES Act which requires that insurers cover the full cost of coronavirus testing, with no co-pays or deductibles applied to the patient. “If you are an out-of-network lab, you can name your price,” said Loren Adler, an associate director at the U.S.C.-Brookings Schaeffer Initiative for Health Policy. “I could say it’s $50,000, and you are required to pay me that amount.”
